To be called to the British Columbia bar, applicants are required to complete a 12-month training program that includes nine months of articles.

This section provides information and resources to support the articling portion of the Law Society Admission Program (LSAP).

For information on applying for enrolment in LSAP, including entering an Articling Agreement and seeking a reduction in the nine-month articling term, see New Admissions.

Description

Learn about the responsibilities of principals and students during the articling term

The Articling Agreement (PDF l Word) that the student and his or her principal are required to enter as part of the application process to LSAP outlines the responsibilities of both parties during the articling term. The Articling Skills and Practice Checklist (PDF l Word) identifies the practical training and experience the student is expected to receive during articles. The Articling Guidelines also contain information about the obligations of principals and students during the articling term.

Learn about the reporting and other requirements during the articling term

The Law Society Rules provide that, during the articling term, the principal and student must submit a mid-term and final report. The Rules also include provisions for secondment of articles, employment outside articles, and leaves of absence during articles: See Articling FAQs.

Assign articles to a new principal

When an articled student wishes to change principals, he or she must apply to the Law Society for an assignment of articles. See Assignment of Articles.
