Nominations open for four Law Society awards

The Law Society is inviting nominations and applications for four awards recognizing excellence in the legal profession: the Law Society Excellence in Family Law Award, the Law Society Award for Leadership in Legal Aid, the Law Society Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award and the newly established Law Society Pro Bono Award. Articling offers by downtown Vancouver firms to stay open to August 16

All offers of articling positions made by law firms with offices in the city of Vancouver north of False Creek and west of Carrall Street must remain open until 8 am on Friday, August 16, 2019. The deadline, set by the Credentials Committee under Rule 2-58, applies to offers made to first and second-year law students, but does not apply to offers made to third-year law students or offers of summer positions (temporary articles). Access invoices and receipts in Member Portal

Lawyers are now able to access and download their Law Society invoices and receipts for the 2019 calendar year and the future through the Member Portal. To access receipts, log in to the Member Portal, click "Skip Notifications" if it appears on the next page, scroll down to the "Invoices and Receipts" heading and click to view details of your account. If you require a receipt for previous years, the Law Society will issue a receipt, upon request, within five business days.

Annual general meeting: Wednesday, October 2, 2019

A reminder that the Law Society's 2019 annual general meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 2. Any member resolutions to be considered at the 2019 AGM must be submitted in writing no later than 5 pm on Wednesday, August 28, 2019. More information about the Law Society's new AGM procedure and timeline is available on our website, and further details about the meeting will be provided in the Second Notice of Annual General Meeting in early September.

Fraudsters continue to target BC lawyers

The Law Society has become aware of two BC law firms that recently were victims of sophisticated social engineering frauds involving millions of dollars.
