Vancouver – The Law Society of BC has ordered Angela Marie Ross, a crown lawyer in Vanderhoof, suspended from practice for one month. The discipline is a result of her actions as a lawyer in private practice in 2002. Ross represented a client who conned Ross into believing he had the money to buy all the shares in a business in Grand Forks. Despite warning signs, Ross neglected to make the necessary calls to check out the man’s story and for a period of time, the business owners believed their business had been sold.
“To protect the public, the Law Society requires that lawyers be on guard against being taken in by an unscrupulous client,” said Stuart Cameron, the Law Society’s Director of Investigations. “If we find a lawyer has fallen below the expected standard of competency, or breached his or her ethical obligations, the lawyer will be disciplined.”
Ross has admitted to professional misconduct, and the Law Society has suspended her for a period of one month.
The Law Society of British Columbia regulates the more than 10,000 lawyers in the province, setting and enforcing standards of professional conduct that ensure the public is well-served by a competent, honourable legal profession.
