Vancouver – The Law Society notes with interest the recent introduction in the Legislature of Bill 44 – Civil Resolution Tribunal Act.
If passed, the Act will create a voluntary process for the resolution of strata and small claims disputes. This will include the introduction of online services to assist in the resolution of disputes by agreement.
The Law Society, like all other stakeholders in the justice system, is looking for ways to enhance access to affordable legal services, particularly in those areas where there is the greatest need.
“We understand the proposed new civil resolution tribunal is intended to provide an additional option for people,” said Bruce LeRose, QC, president of the Society. “We are reviewing the proposal from the perspective of the public interest in the administration of justice.”
The Law Society of British Columbia regulates the more than 10,000 lawyers in the province, setting and enforcing standards of professional conduct that ensure the public is well-served by a competent, honourable legal profession.
