Vancouver – The Law Society of British Columbia extends its congratulations to Suzanne Côté on her appointment to the Supreme Court of Canada. Well regarded in the legal community, Côté specializes in complex civil and commercial litigation, and has garnered national and international recognition as a leading litigator.

“Ms. Côté brings a wealth of experience to the country’s top court and I am confident she will serve Canadians well,” said Law Society President Jan Lindsay, QC.

The Law Society recognizes the importance of a judiciary that reflects the communities it serves. Earlier this year, the Benchers adopted recommendations in a report from the Law Society’s Equity and Diversity Advisory Committee to support improved diversity on the Bench.

While the Law Society celebrates Côté’s appointment, it encourages the federal government to allay concerns regarding the transparency of the process around judicial appointments.

The Law Society of British Columbia regulates the more than 11,000 practising lawyers in the province, setting and enforcing standards of professional conduct that ensure the public is well-served by a competent, honourable legal profession.
