President’s Blog

January 20, 2015

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself – I’m Ken Walker, and I have the privilege to be your president in 2015. I plan to continue the President’s Blog started by Jan Lindsay, so I hope you’ll visit this page on a regular basis. Communicating directly with members will be important this year, as we will be making decisions that will affect the regulatory environment, amongst other things. I will use this blog to explain and share details on these projects.

First, I’d like to give you some background on myself, and touch on what I hope to accomplish during my term as president. The Law Society has important work to do, and I am committed to making 2015 a successful and productive year.

I grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan, and moved to BC when I began my articles. I am proud to have called Kamloops my home for the last 40 years. This year, however, I’m getting used to the urban environment, as I’m spending part of my time in Vancouver on Law Society business.

During my career, I have worked and travelled throughout the small communities in rural BC and although I love this province, I must admit I’ve been troubled by the access to justice issues I’ve encountered. I’m committed to moving the marker on this issue during my term as president, and will give you details on our plans in future blog posts.

PLTC is another area that we’ll be addressing in 2015. Issues around mobility have placed program change on the agenda, and this year we’ll consider the best attributes of training programs across the country, to determine what our admission program should look like moving forward.

I will also keep you abreast of matters regarding TWU’s proposed law school, and many other important issues the Law Society is working on.

I hope you will visit often.
