The Law Society of BC welcomes Natasha Dookie as its new chief legal officer. Her appointment takes effect on March 5, 2019.
Dookie brings considerable regulatory and professional conduct experience to her role. In 2008 she was legal counsel with the Real Estate Council of BC, where she advised on matters involving disciplinary proceedings against licensees. She later joined the BC College of Teachers, where she was the director of professional conduct and legal counsel. In September 2012, she was recruited to be the deputy registrar and chief officer with the College of Registered Nurses of BC, where her responsibilities included instructing and supervising counsel for inquiry proceedings, discipline hearings, reviews and appeals.
Most recently, when multiple BC nursing regulators were amalgamated in 2018 to become the BC College of Nursing Professionals, Dookie was named deputy registrar of the college’s Inquiry and Discipline group.
Law Society CEO Don Avison first came to know Dookie in 2010 during his review of the BC College of Teachers. “I found Natasha to be highly intelligent, principled, courageous and tenacious and I’m delighted that my colleagues and I will now have the benefit of working with her,” said Avison. “I believe she is a tremendous addition to the staff leadership group at the Law Society and that we will benefit greatly from her record of unwavering commitment to the public interest.”
“I am honoured by the opportunity to contribute to the important work of the Law Society,” commented Dookie. “I became a lawyer because I wanted to make a positive difference in society, and I plan to bring my passion for serving in the public interest to my role as chief legal officer.”
