In anticipation of the retirement of a longstanding Law Society employee, the Law Society is looking for a new Tribunal Counsel.

Reporting to the Designated Head of the Law Society Tribunal, the Tribunal Counsel is responsible for the Law Society adjudication programs as well as for the management of the Hearing Administrator and other Tribunal staff.

Responsibilities of the Tribunal Counsel include:

  • Administration of the hearing registry; assisting in selection and assignment of adjudicators, including managing a recruitment project and supporting a small committee for that purpose biennially.
  • Organizing and participating in the formal training of panelists, including new Benchers:
  • Curriculum development.
  • Attending and teaching some courses.
  • Contracting with other instructors.
  • Organizing logistics and materials.
  • Advising panels, review boards, Benchers and Tribunal staff on procedural and legal issues as required.
  • Ensuring appropriate procedures are followed in the appointment of panels and review boards including conflicts checks.
  • Reviewing and editing all written decisions and summaries, commenting and advising as appropriate with respect to legal issues.
  • Reviewing summaries for publication and obtaining approval of panel and review board chairs.
  • Ensuring accessible, current and accurate information is communicated to the public and the profession through the Tribunal portion of the Law Society website and to Tribunal adjudicators through the secure portal.
  • Supervision of the Hearing Administrator and other Tribunal staff.
  • Participating in policy and rule development.
  • Preparing budget materials for Tribunal Counsel, Tribunal Costs and monitoring expenditures.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is a member in good standing of the Law Society of BC (or eligible for membership) with a minimum of 10 years of experience working within or before tribunals and/or regulators, and/or legal practice with substantial concentration in administrative law.

As well the ideal candidate will have:

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of administrative law.
  • Superior plain language writing skills and excellent interpersonal, advocacy and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices and approaches with respect to administrative tribunals.

Some teaching experience would be an asset.
