Vancouver – Reporters can now access a new resource created by the Law Society of BC to assist journalists who cover legal stories. Handy hints for legal reporting contains information on everything from how to get court accreditation to how to deal with publication bans all in one convenient location.

This free resource is available in the Law Society’s new and enhanced online newsroom. It contains an image gallery and makes it easier for journalists to find information on everything from discipline decisions to legal experts.

Journalists play a vital role in informing and educating the public on important legal issues and cases. Accurate court and other legal reporting is in the public interest and the Law Society is working to help journalists where it can.

In addition to producing Handy hints for legal reporting, the Law Society partners with the Jack Webster Foundation annually to hold a free media workshop featuring experts in media law. The goal is to help journalists boost or refresh their knowledge of law, as it relates to journalism.

The Law Society also sponsors the annual Jack Webster Award for Excellence in Legal Journalism, which is open to members of the BC media.

The Law Society of British Columbia regulates the more than 10,000 lawyers in the province, setting and enforcing standards of professional conduct that ensure the public is well-served by a competent, honourable legal profession.
