Vancouver – The Law Society of British Columbia expresses concern about reports in the media of comments made by the Prime Minister of Canada regarding the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Beverley McLachlin.

Judges, not being free to defend themselves, are entitled to receive the support of the legal profession against unjust criticism and complaint. The Law Society has complete confidence in the integrity and conduct of the Chief Justice and stresses that our system of government can only operate effectively if each branch of government is respectful in its dealings with the other branches.

The Law Society of British Columbia regulates the more than 11,000 practising lawyers in the province, setting and enforcing standards of professional conduct that ensure the public is well-served by a competent, honourable legal profession.
