Vancouver, November 5, 2015 – The Law Society is proud to have once again been a part of the annual Jack Webster Awards by sponsoring the award celebrating outstanding legal journalism. The 2015 Jack Webster Award for Excellence in Legal Journalism was given to Travis Lupick of the Georgia Straight. Lupick won for his story “Former inmate shares his story of B.C. prisons’ revolving doors,” which examines why one-quarter of those who enter BC’s correctional system will return five times or more.

The other finalists for the award were Nelson Bennett of Business in Vancouver for his reporting on the effect of anti-spam laws on marketing, and Tracy Sherlock of the Vancouver Sun for her coverage of the protracted teachers’ court battle with the province.

The Award for Excellence in Legal Journalism honours an individual journalist or a team of journalists for a story about a legal issue, the legal profession or the administration of justice in BC. The winner is chosen by an independent panel of current and former journalists and other members of the community.

In addition to its involvement with the Webster Awards, the Law Society partners with the Jack Webster Foundation for the annual Law and the Media Workshop. Jack Webster was one of the original members of the public to help regulate the BC legal profession when he was appointed by the provincial government in 1988 to serve on the Law Society’s board of governors.

Congratulations to all of the 2015 Jack Webster Award winners.

The Law Society of British Columbia upholds and protects the public interest in the administration of justice by ensuring the independence, integrity and competence of lawyers, establishing education and professional development standards for lawyers, regulating the practice of law and preserving and protecting the rights and freedoms of all persons.
