Vancouver – The Law Society of BC has provided financial assistance to the creation of the Public Commission on Legal Aid in BC which will commence a series of cross-provincial hearings in September 2010.

The goal of this independent commission is to engage the people of the province in discussion and the development of solutions to problems associated with accessing legal aid. The commission will be headed by Leonard Doust, QC, a well-respected senior member of the legal profession in the province.

“The Law Society is pleased to support an initiative designed to develop real and sustainable solutions to providing legal aid to those in need,” quoted Glen Ridgway,QC, president of the Law Society.

Other partners in this joint project include the Canadian Bar Association, British Columbia Branch, the Law Foundation of British Columbia, the British Columbia Crown Counsel Association, the Vancouver Bar Association and the Victoria Bar Association.

Members of the public, representatives of legal associations and legal professionals are invited to make submissions and suggestions as to the future of legal aid via the commission website at publiccommission.org.
