Vancouver – The Law Society of BC is using social media to allow the public to get a glimpse of its inner workings.

Law Society revealed: a one-day insider’s view through Twitter is part of the Society’s on-going commitment to transparency and accountability.

“We recognize there has been a shift in how self-regulating bodies, such as ours, are viewed by the public,” said Law Society president Bruce LeRose, QC. “Many people may have questions about lawyers investigating other lawyers. We’re here to answer those questions.”

In an extraordinary move for any self-regulating body, the Society will showcase in real time the work it is doing and will interact with interested members of the public. This virtual open house will take place all day on Twitter –  @LawSocietyofBC – on Wednesday April 18.

The event is part of  Law Week, which is put on by the Canadian Bar Association in partnership with the Law Society and others. The 2012 theme is Access to Justice: The Celebration of the Charter of Rights.

“Many people know that the Charter is one of the cornerstones of Canada’s democracy, but a lot of people don’t know that a well-regulated, independent legal profession is, too,” added LeRose. “This isn’t about what’s good for lawyers, it’s about what’s good for the public, and we hope this one-day event on Twitter will help shed light on that.”

The Law Society has been working to build public confidence for more than 100 years. Most recently, it selected members of the public to be among those to discipline lawyers. A timeline of changes to bring more transparency to the self-regulation of BC lawyers can be found on the Law Society’s website.

The Law Society of British Columbia regulates the more than 10,000 lawyers in the province, setting and enforcing standards of professional conduct that ensure the public is well-served by a competent, honourable legal profession.
