Vancouver – Art Vertlieb, QC, the first vice-president of the Law Society of British Columbia, has been awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
The commemorative medal recognizes Canadians who have made significant contributions to their communities, and their country. Vertlieb received the award at a ceremony September 8 at the Ismaili Centre in Burnaby along with several other members of the legal community, including Chief Justice Lance Finch, Chief Justice Robert Bauman, and Chief Judge Thomas Crabtree.
“I am deeply honoured,” said Vertlieb. “To be recognized alongside community leaders from across the province and across the country is truly special for me.”
Vertlieb’s distinguished legal career has spanned almost 40 years. He helped create the Trial Lawyers Association of BC in 1980 and the Lawyers Assistance Program 1989. Vertlieb has served as a governor of the American Association for Justice and was inducted into the International Academy of Trial Lawyers in 2010. Vertlieb has also served on many Law Society committees and currently chairs the Finance Committee. Vertlieb will serve as Law Society President in 2013.
The Law Society of British Columbia regulates the more than 10,000 lawyers in the province, setting and enforcing standards of professional conduct that ensure the public is well-served by a competent, honourable legal profession.
