Vancouver, August 5, 2016 – The Law Society of British Columbia applauds the recent announcement of the appointment of five commissioners to head the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

This is a significant milestone in confronting a legacy of systemic injustices and moving forward toward reconciliation with Canada’s Indigenous peoples. By examining and reporting on the systemic causes behind the violence that Indigenous women and girls experience, the inquiry addresses a key recommendation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, marking an important advance in safeguarding the public interest in the administration of justice.

The Law Society of British Columbia upholds and protects the public interest in the administration of justice by ensuring the independence, integrity and competence of lawyers, establishing education and professional development standards for lawyers, regulating the practice of law and preserving and protecting the rights and freedoms of all persons.
