The Law Society is considering seeking leave to intervene in Single Mothers' Alliance of BC Society, Nicolina Bell (also known as Nicole Bell), and A.B. v. Her Majesty the Queen in Right of the Province of British Columbia and Legal Services Society. Claims have been advanced that the framework for the provincial legal aid scheme, administered by the Defendants, contravenes a number of Charter rights of the Plaintiffs, including ss. 7 and 15. There are a number of significant issues raised in the action that involve the public interest in the administration of justice, and the Law Society will review the statements of defence once the pleadings have closed so that it will be in the best position to make a determination as to whether to seek leave to intervene in the public interest.
