2019 Annual General Meeting of the Law Society of British Columbia

Advance Voting Online

Advance online voting on the resolution to be considered at the 2019 Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be available from Tuesday, September 17 until 5:00 pm on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. Voter credentials and instructions on how to access the voting site will be sent to all eligible voters on September 17, 2019. Only Law Society of BC members in good standing (whether practising, non-practising or retired) will be eligible to vote.

Online voting will not be available after 5:00 pm on October 1 or on the day of the meeting.

To watch a webcast of the meeting, after 12:30 pm PDT on October 2, go to the Law Society website (www.lawsociety.bc.ca) and log in to the Member Portal. Click on the link under 2019 Annual General Meeting to access the webcast.

 

BC lawyers and articled students may also attend the AGM at the main venue in Vancouver, or at one of the nine locations linked by audio-conference to the main meeting. If you attend in person, you will be asked to register on arrival and you may be asked for identification. If you have not already voted online in advance of the meeting, you will be provided with a voting card. If you have already voted online in advance of the meeting, you are permitted to attend the meeting but will be provided with a non-voting card.

If you are planning to attend the meeting in person, it is important that you RSVP at the earliest opportunity by logging in to the Member Portal on the Law Society website (www.lawsociety.bc.ca)

Business of the meeting

The business of the 2019 AGM will be as follows:

  • Election of Second Vice-President for 2020
  • Benchers’ report of proceedings since last meeting
  • Resolution 1: Appointment of Law Society auditors for 2019

Election of Second Vice-President for 2020

Each year at the AGM, there is to be an election for the position of Second Vice-President-elect.  Pursuant to Law Society Rule 1-19, if only one candidate is nominated, the President will declare that candidate Second-Vice-President-elect. The Benchers are pleased to announce their nomination of Lisa Hamilton, QC for Second Vice-President-elect.

Pursuant to Rule 1-5(2), the Second Vice-President for 2020 will be First Vice-President in 2021 and President in 2022.

 

Lisa Hamilton, QCLisa Hamilton, QC

Lisa Hamilton, QC is a founding partner of Hamilton Fabbro, practising family law. She attended UBC (psychology) and UVic (law), and was called to the bar in 1995.

Elected a Bencher in 2016, Lisa is currently a member of the Executive Committee, Complainants' Review Committee, Ethics Committee and Access to Legal Services Advisory Committee. She is the Law Society representative on both the Provincial Court Family Law Rules Working Group and on the Supreme Court Rules Committee.

She has served the legal profession as treasurer and co-chair of the CBABC Vancouver Family Law Section; elected member of the Provincial Council of the CBABC; member of the Family Law Working Group of the CBABC for law reform; and member of the board of directors of CLE.

Lisa is a member of, and has written and presented for: the CBA, Trial Lawyers Association of BC, BC Arbitration and Mediation Institute, Family Law Advocates Group and BC Parenting Coordinators Roster Society. Lisa has assisted editing practice checklists for the Law Society and practice manuals for CLE. Lisa has served as a guest instructor at UBC, PLTC and the BCAMI Family Law Arbitrator Training Course.

 

Benchers’ report: Proceedings since last meeting

Pursuant to Rule 1-8(4), on behalf of the Benchers, President Nancy G. Merrill, QC will provide a brief outline of Law Society proceedings since the 2018 Annual General Meeting.

Resolutions

Resolution 1: Appointment of Law Society auditors for 2019

BE IT RESOLVED that PricewaterhouseCoopers be appointed as the Law Society auditors for the year ending December 31, 2019.
