The Honourable E.N. (Ted) Hughes, QC passed away on Friday, January 17, 2020 at the age of 92. He was BC’s first conflict-of-interest commissioner, BC’s Deputy Attorney General for seven years and chaired the Attorney General’s Justice Reform Committee. He also served as Acting Secretary of the Law Society in 1997, following the appointment of Bryan Ralph, QC to the bench.

Hughes chaired the Law Society’s Gender Bias Committee in 1992, which published the influential report “Gender Equality in the Justice System.” The report focused on gender bias in the justice system and legal profession, and made 300 recommendations directed at institutions in the justice system. In 2000, he received the Law Society Award in recognition of his many exceptional contributions to the justice system and the legal profession.

The Vancouver Sun reports that the family is planning a service at St. John the Divine Anglican Church in Victoria.
