Burnaby lawyer Anthony L. Shiau has received a four-week suspension after reaching a consent agreement with the Law Society to resolve a complaint relating to trust accounting rules.

Shiau admitted that between May 2021 and March 2022, he failed to deposit funds into a pooled trust account, neglected to verify client identification information and transferred funds from his trust account to his general account to process refunds prior to delivering a bill — all of which are contrary to the Law Society rules.

In considering the consent agreement proposal, the Law Society took into account the fact that Shiau does not have a prior professional conduct record. Shiau acknowledged that he was at fault and has reviewed the Law Society’s Trust Accounting Handbook. He has also completed the Law Society’s Trust Accounting Basics, Trust Accounting Regulatory Requirements, and Anti-Money Laundering webinars.

Shiau agreed to a suspension of four weeks, from July 1, 2023 to July 29, 2023.
