Former Vancouver lawyer Rene Joan Gantzert has been disbarred for misconduct relating to the inappropriate use of trust funds.

The hearing panel found that in 2018 and 2019, Gantzert knowingly misappropriated over $60,000 in client trust funds in a personal injury case, and subsequently failed to respond to communications from the Law Society.

In making the decision, the hearing panel took into consideration the seriousness of the misconduct and that being an experienced lawyer, he should have known his conduct was wrong. In addition, Gantzert financially benefited at the expense of his client and never acknowledged his misconduct, which calls for a serious sanction.

Gantzert was immediately disbarred and must pay $8,420 in costs.
