On Wednesday, October 4, the Law Society of BC and the Jack Webster Foundation are hosting the Legal Issues Masterclass, previously known as the Law and the Media Workshop. The masterclass offers an opportunity for journalists, journalism students and educators to refresh and enhance their knowledge of the laws around reporting and journalism. You can attend the event in person or virtually.

During the masterclass, expert panelists will explore three important legal issues facing journalists today:

  • Photos and videos from online sources and social media: who owns them, who can use them and Intellectual Property aspects;
  • The top legal issues to consider when you receive a tip and begin to investigate a story; and
  • Criminal proceedings and publication bans – what you can report?

Our panelists are:

  • Dan Burnett, KC, media lawyer, Owen Bird Law Corporation
  • Kim Bolan, crime reporter, Vancouver Sun
  • Bhupinder Hundal, news director and station manager, Global BC
  • Daniel Coles, media lawyer, Owen Bird Law Corporation
