Squamish lawyer Douglas Bernard Chiasson has received a two-month suspension for professional misconduct. The suspension will commence on January 1, 2024.

The hearing panel found that Chiasson failed to promptly remit GST, PST and employee payroll deductions to the Canada Revenue Agency and the provincial government. The panel also found that he failed to notify the Law Society of three unsatisfied monetary judgements against him and five trust shortages ranging between approximately $3,000 and $19,800, and he failed to immediately eliminate these trust shortages.

In imposing the two-month suspension, the hearing panel considered Chiasson’s professional conduct record, which includes three prior findings of professional misconduct, and determined a fine was insufficient as a sanction. The panel has also ordered Chiasson to pay $9,000 in costs to the Law Society.
