Articling is the last phase of your formal legal education prior to call and admission and, as an articled student, you will begin to balance out your studies with practical work under the supervision and guidance of your principal.
Obligations of a student
- As an articled student, you are responsible to the Law Society and should study the Law Society Rules and the Code of Professional Conduct for BC, both of which will have an effect on your career as a student and later as a lawyer.
- Your Law Society student identification card is required to gain entrance to the Courthouse Libraries BC after hours on weekdays and on weekends. You may also find the card necessary for identification purposes at the registries and at prisons.
- During your articling period, you will be required to have a personal interview with a Bencher, who will make a report to the Law Society.
- To ensure that you receive a fully rounded set of articles from your principal, you are obligated to obtain practical training and experience in all lawyering skills and at least one of the practice areas set out in the Articling Skills and Practice Checklist.
- You must provide mid-term and final progress reports during the articling period.
- You must complete the Practice Management course as part of the articling requirements. The course must be completed prior to call and admission, and can be taken at any time after enrolment. In order to access the course and complete the modules, articled students must log in to their student portal.
