Free public forum to address disability issues

Join the Law Society of BC on Thursday, April 26 for a free public forum, Equal Access for People with Disabilities. Moderated by Vancouver Sun columnist Peter McKnight, the forum will bring together a panel of legal and other experts to discuss issues faced by people with disabilities, including access to justice, courthouse accessibility and choices that can assist with employment opportunities. The forum will be presented in partnership with the BC Coalition of People with Disabilities and in association with the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the BC Paraplegic Association, CBC and The Vancouver Sun.

Low income survey

The Law Society Fees and Low Income Client Task Force has prepared a consultation paper on the issue of whether the Special Compensation Fund fee and Trust Administration Fee are causing undue hardship for lawyers who represent low-income clients. The consultation paper (PDF: 299 KB) is available on the Law Society's website, and an online questionnaire has been developed to gather your feedback on these important issues. Celebrate Law Week: April 16-22

Law Week 2007, focused this year on "Access to Justice," kicks off today to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Proclamation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The series of events, sponsored by the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch, the Vancouver Bar Association and the Law Foundation of BC aim to improve understanding of the law and the legal system. As part of Law Week, the Law Society will join Law Day open houses to be held this Saturday, April 21 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at the Vancouver Public Library and at the Victoria Courthouse from 10 am to 3 pm.
