Satwinder Kaur Bains is an Associate Professor in Social Cultural Media Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley and the Director of the Centre for Indo Canadian Studies. Her current research interests include: migration and integration; gender, race, racism and ethnicity; politics of Sikh identity and cultural historiographies.

Satwinder has served as a member of the Farm Industry Review Board (1997-2005), Chair of the The United Way of the Fraser Valley, Director of Abbotsford Hospice, Governor of the Board of the University of the Fraser Valley, Chair of the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley, numerous City of Abbotsford committees and Summer Games 1995. She is currently serving in her appointment as a commissioner on the Agricultural Land Commission since 2014 and is a Director on the Fraser Basin Council since 2014.

An Appointed Bencher since 2010, Satwinder is currently Co-Chair of the Complainants' Review Committee and a member of the Executive Committee, Credentials Committee and Governance Committee.
