Pro Bono Forum planned for January, 2001

The Law Society and the CBA will host a Pro Bono Forum on January 19 and 20, 2001 in Vancouver. This Forum — which is possible thanks to funding from the Law Foundation of B.C. — will encourage a collaborative approach to the coordination, delivery and promotion of pro bono services throughout the province.

The Pro Bono Forum will gather together representatives from community organizations, lawyers and others from around the province who are interested in pro bono. Participants will engage in a broad consultation to:

  • identify the needs in communities for pro bono legal services and the gaps in service that now prevent equal access to justice, and develop practical approaches for matching these needs with legal resources;
  • develop and disseminate materials, modules, information and advice to community organizations wishing to develop pro bono clinics or services; and
  • assist with the development of a pro bono website, a prototype of which will be ready in time for the Forum.

Topics such as models for the delivery of pro bono, quality assurance, conflicts-checking systems, insurance issues, training and support for volunteer lawyers, and ways to access financial resources to support disbursements and other out-of-pocket costs associated with pro bono, will be examined at the Forum.

The Law Society and CBA expect to welcome community organizations and agencies, judges, lawyers, law students, representatives from PLTC, CLE, the Legal Services Society, the UVic and UBC law schools, the law school clinic programs and other pro bono programs.

All lawyers interested in becoming involved in pro bono programs are warmly encouraged to attend the Forum.
