Up in Smoke: Justice and the Drug Debate

Free Workshop for Registered Media Only – April 1, 2000

VANCOUVER – Drugs: legalize or prosecute? Hard or soft? Is the drug debate a health, social, legal or moral issue? What about the justice system? What are the legal and human costs of drug possession and addiction?

Reporters and editors are urged to register quickly for an April 1st media workshop presented by the BC legal and journalism professions. Sponsored by the Law Society of British Columbia, the Canadian Bar Association (BC Branch) and the Canadian Association of Journalists, BC Branch, "Up in Smoke: Justice and the Drug Debate" will bring together expert panelists within the justice and health care systems. This includes lawyers, police officers, judges, addiction treatment and research advocates and families affected by drug use. Confirmed speakers so far include Chief Judge Robert Metzger, Chief Coroner Larry Campbell, and Vancouver Drug Squad Unit Detective Robb McLaren.

The workshop takes place on Saturday, April 1st at the Plaza 500 Hotel at Cambie/12th Avenue in Vancouver, starting at 9:00 a.m. The event is free to any registered reporter or editor from an accredited media organization. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis.
