Victoria lawyer elected 2001 Law Society President

Richard S. Margetts, Q.C. has been elected President of the Law Society of B.C. for the 2001 term. A graduate of the University of B.C. and Monash University (Australia), Mr. Margetts was called to the B.C. Bar in 1981 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2000. He is a general practitioner with Johns, Southward, Glazier, Walton and Margetts in Victoria.

Elected a Bencher of the Law Society in 1995, Mr. Margetts has served the Law Society in many capacities, most recently as Chair of its Discipline Committee and Vice-Chair of the Futures Task Force. He has also served the legal profession through volunteer work for the Canadian Bar Association and the Continuing Legal Education Society of B.C. In community life, Mr. Margetts has served as Secretary for the YM/YWCA of Victoria and was race director for the Island Road Relay from 1991 to 1995.

Mr. Margetts' agenda will focus on ensuring lawyers are able to meet the public's need for efficient and inexpensive legal advice. "Economic, social and political growth require us, now more than ever, to re-evaluate the fashion in which we deliver our services," Margetts said. "I expect multidisciplinary practice, alternative dispute resolution and other issues to come to the forefront of Law Society work. Access to justice, the delivery of legal services and our ability to serve the public's needs will occupy us for years to come."

With over 10,000 members, the Law Society of British Columbia is the governing body for the B.C. legal profession. Its chief executive officer is the Executive Director and its senior elected official is the President. The Benchers are members of the Board of Directors. The Law Society's principal responsibility is to uphold and protect the public interest in the administration of justice and to set standards for the education, professional responsibility and competence of practising lawyers in the province.
