Invitation to media to attend free workshop in Kamloops: Get the story, avoid the legal traps

Vancouver Journalists in and near Kamloops are invited to participate in Get the story, avoid the legal traps: 2012 Law and the Media Workshop, presented by the Law Society of BC and the Jack Webster Foundation.

This is not a press conference, but rather an opportunity for reporters, producers and editors to enhance their coverage of legal stories by boosting or refreshing their knowledge of law as it relates to journalism. This annual event is most frequently held in the Vancouver-area, and the Law Society is pleased to be able to offer this year’s workshop  in Kamloops.

From the first tip to the final edit, the courts expect journalists to adhere to nine "responsibility factors". How do you pursue the story without getting sued, and what do you do when your information takes an unexpected turn? In the fast-paced world of today's news, dealing with legally tricky questions is part of managing a great story. Attend the 2012 Law and the Media Workshop and gain the tools and insight you need to help you become legally savvy.

Panellists include:

Dan Burnett, media lawyer
Sandy Heimlich-Hall, Assistant News Director, CFJC TV7
David Sutherland, media lawyer

Held on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Thompson Rivers University, Campus Activity Centre, 900 McGill Road, Conference Centre Room 130, admission is FREE and a complimentary meal will be available at 7:00 pm.
