PLTC Skills Assessments
The Professional Legal Training Course (PLTC) skills assessments and the qualification examinations verify that a student has attained the necessary knowledge and skills for entry into the legal profession.
A student may not receive any assistance whatsoever in completing skills assessments or examinations.
- Completion of four skills assessments
- Passing mark of at least 70% in each assessment
You must prepare and present a written outline and oral argument for a contested chambers application for a civil dispute in the Supreme Court. Acting for either an applicant or a respondent, you will receive the assessment problem (along with the relevant documents and cases) approximately 10 days before the assessment.
PLTC teaches the skill of advocacy and marks the Advocacy Assessment using the PLTC Oral Submission Guide.
The Chambers application is observed by an instructor playing the role of judge and is recorded in case further review is necessary.
You must write an opinion letter to a client based on a memorandum of instructions given to you approximately 10 days before the assessment is due.
PLTC teaches the skill of writing and marks the Writing Assessment using the PLTC Writing Guide.
You must draft an agreement for a client based on a memorandum of instructions given to you approximately 10 days before the assessment is due.
PLTC teaches the skill of drafting and marks the Drafting Assessment using the PLTC Drafting Guide.
You must interview and advise a new client. A student (as lawyer) has 45 minutes in which to interview another student (who plays the role of a client). You will be advised of the general topic approximately 10 days before the assessment.
PLTC teaches the skill of interviewing and marks performances on the basis of the PLTC Interviewing and Advising Guide.
The interview is observed by an instructor and is recorded in case further review is necessary.
