BC lawyers and articled students are invited to attend the next Annual General Meeting of the Law Society, which will be held on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 in various locations throughout the province. Call to order will be at 12:30 pm. Details about the meeting are posted and updated regularly on the Law Society's website.

Second cycle of Aboriginal Lawyers Mentorship Program to launch

Lawyers across BC interested in participating in the Aboriginal Lawyers Mentorship Program are encouraged to attend a meet and greet reception to launch the program's second cycle. The event provides an opportunity for junior Aboriginal lawyers to meet and be paired with experienced lawyers to establish a mentor-mentee relationship. The meet and greet will take place on Friday, September 12, 2014 at the offices of Mandell Pinder LLP, Suite 422-1080 Mainland St, Vancouver, BC. The reception will begin at 5:00 pm. For more information, or to confirm attendance at the reception, contact Andrea Hilland, Law Society staff lawyer, at ahilland@lsbc.org or 604.443.5727.

2014 Law Society Award update

The Law Society Award will be presented at the 30th annual Bench & Bar Dinner on November 6, 2014. Four nominations for the award were received earlier this year. The Law Society Award Committee has recommended a recipient for the Benchers to consider at their meeting on September 26. The recipient will be announced later this month.

Amendments to the BC Code

As a result of recommendations from the Alternative Dispute Resolution Task Force, a preamble was added to the BC Code to remind lawyers that the Code governs their conduct, not only in the practice of law, but in other activities as well. Amendments were also adopted that recognize the difficulty of distinguishing between legal advice and legal information and permitting a lawyer, in certain circumstances, to act for both spouses in a divorce action (section 5.7, commentary [1], [1.1] and [5]).

Call for QC nominations

The BC Ministry of Justice is accepting nominations until October 10, 2014 for Queen's Counsel appointments. Queen's Counsel appointments recognize BC lawyers for distinctive merit and contribution to the legal profession. For information or a nomination form, see the ministry website

From the courts

Effective September 2, 2014, PD 37 - Consent Order to Waive Trial Management Conference, will be rescinded. PD-37 came into effect two years ago, and applied only to trials set for hearing in Vancouver for nine days or less. PD-37 was intended to provide a somewhat streamlined process for consent applications to waive the TMC; however there has been little uptake. Although the practice direction is rescinded effective September 2, 2014, a consent application to waive the TMC can still be made under the SC Rules.

From the Public Guardian and Trustee

On August 1, 2014, the Public Guardian and Trustee Fees Regulation was amended.
