If you require advice from a practice advisor, please consider the following suggestions to help us help you:

  • Book an appointment through ADMA. The Advice Decision-Making Assistant (ADMA) tool enables you to book an appointment with a practice advisor at a time that is convenient for your schedule.
  • Emails and phones calls. Be sure to set out detailed information in your email or voicemail. We endeavour to return messages within two business days. To assist us in processing your inquiry quickly, provide the following information:
    • your full name, including the spelling of your last name;
    • your phone number and local (if leaving a voicemail, please repeat at least once);
    • the subject matter and your question or issue;
    • any restrictions on your availability for a call;
    • whether the matter is urgent or time-sensitive – Note: if your matter is urgent, consider booking an appointment with a practice advisor through ADMA as noted above. You can indicate the urgency in your request and appointments are typically available on the same day.

With voicemails, above all, please speak clearly and slowly. We cannot return your call if we do not understand who is calling and your telephone number. We want to hear from you and we’re here to help.

  • Submit one request for advice. If you contact Practice Advice more than once, it may actually take longer to receive a reply as we will need to determine who will respond. If you have contacted us more than once about the same issue, either by phone or email, be sure to indicate this so that only one person is handling your request and we are not duplicating our efforts.
  • Ask your question at the beginning of the call, voicemail or email.  It is helpful to identify the issue(s) at the outset of the conversation. The practice advisor will likely have questions and you will have an opportunity to fill in background details as necessary.
  • Contacting Practice Advice on behalf of a lawyer. In some cases, practice advisors will answer queries from someone contacting us by email on a lawyer’s behalf (e.g. an assistant or paralegal) provided the representative has copied the lawyer. Often practice advisors need to speak directly with the lawyer.
  • Identify the relevant guidance you have reviewed and considered. Practice advice discussions are more productive when the lawyer is already familiar with the relevant guidance (e.g. in the Practice Advisors FAQs, the Code of Professional Conduct, the Legal Profession Act and the Law Society Rules). The Advice Decision-Making Assistant (ADMA) tool can assist you in identifying these references, as well as specific Support and Resources for Lawyers that would be helpful to review in advance of your discussion with a practice advisor.
  • Delayed responses and follow-up requests. If you have not received a response within two business days, please call or email again, and be sure to indicate when and how you previously contacted us. There may, for example, have been an issue with audibility or we may not have received your message.
