Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a CPD Provider?

Please apply to become a CPD Provider by clicking the link here - CPD Provider.

Once you have completed the form and clicked "register" you will be sent an email confirmation with your log in credentials.


I am unable to register as a CPD Provider and I am asked to contact Registration & Licensee Services.

There may be a CPD Provider account already active for your Provider name.

Please email cpd@lsbc.org so that we can assist you in setting up your account.


Can I delete previous course listings?

We are unable to delete previous course listings if a Member has used the course to claim credit for completion.


Is this course eligible for CPD Credit / Can I register this course?

In registering as a Provider of courses under the Law Society of British Columbia's Continuing Professional Development Program, the Provider agrees that all courses listed comply with the following set criteria:

  1. substantive law
  2. procedural law
  3. professional ethics
  4. practice management (including client care and relations)
  5. lawyering skills
  6. professional wellness
  7. non-legal topics sufficiently connected to the practice of law
  8. pro bono activities

The following are excluded from accreditation:

  1. activity designed for or targeted primarily at clients

Please note that Law Society staff will not advise whether a particular course is eligible for CPD Credit.


When will my course be approved?

Once you register as a Provider, you are able to register courses for pre-approval and they will be immediately available through the CPD Member Portal.

If the courses contain Family Law ADR qualification hours, these courses will be further reviewed by the Law Society and may take up to 10 business days for approval.


What delivery method should I use for my course?

If the course is to be recorded and able to be viewed at a later date after its original air/start date, please select one of the following delivery methods:

  • Archived webcast/podcast
  • In person/Webinar (live)
  • In-house program
  • Section Meeting
  • Online course
  • Study Group
  • Webinar (live)
  • Webinar rebroadcast with live chat

Why is the end-date of my course automatically December 31, 2025?

If the course delivery method is one of the methods listed above, the course date will be automatically changed to December 31, 2025 to allow lawyers to claim completion of a recorded course at any time of the calendar year.


How can I stop the course end date from automatically changing to December 31, 2025?

If your course is not going to be recorded or will not be able to be viewed/completed at a later date, after the intended listed end date, please select one of the following delivery methods:

  • In person
  • Teleconference
  • Live course lecture
  • Conference

Courses that contain ADR Qualification Hours

Please note the following guidelines if you are seeking to request approval for courses that can be claimed for Family Law ADR qualification course hours:

Requirements for course accreditation


Mediation:

Course work must include:

  1. Theory and Skills Training
  2. Drafting
  3. How to Conduct a Mediation
  4. The Statutory Framework of Mediation
  5. Family Dynamics
  6. Role Playing Scenarios *

* please note that you are required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of role playing scenarios in order to be qualified for accreditation.

Arbitration:

Course work must include:

  1. Theory and Skills Training
  2. Drafting
  3. How to Conduct an Arbitration
  4. The Statutory Framework of Arbitration
  5. Family Dynamics
  6. Administrative Law Principles Governing Arbitrations

Parent Coordinator:

Course work must include:

  1. Parent Coordination Skills Training and Theory
  2. Dealing with High Conflict Families and Individuals
  3. Child Development, Interviewing Clients, and the Effects of Separation and Divorce on Children
  4. The Effects of Separation and Divorce on Adults

* In addition a parenting coordinator must also complete 80 hours of training in mediation and 40 hours of training in arbitration.

Family Violence:

Training in screening for family violence must include:

  1. Skills for Identifying, Evaluating and Managing Family Violence
  2. Issues of Power Dynamics in Particular Relation to the Dispute Resolution Process

Any courses in relation to the above will be reviewed on a course-by-course basis. Lawyers will also be asked to specify completion dates when seeking to claim CPD credit.

  • For courses over 5 hours we also must be provided with an agenda when you are submitting your course for approval.

Do you provide marketing material or your logo so that I may advertise my course?

We do not provide our logo or marketing material to be used in advertising your courses.
