Future harm/public safety exception

The following are resources that may be helpful in answering your enquiry. Please familiarize yourself with them before moving on.

In brief: The future harm/public safety exception is an exception to the rule of lawyer client confidentiality. A lawyer may disclose confidential information, but must not disclose more information than is required, when they believe on reasonable grounds that there is an imminent risk of death or serious bodily harm, and disclosure is necessary to prevent the death or harm. These are tough circumstances to navigate so please feel welcome to contact a Practice Advisor to discuss.

Key Resources

Code - Disclosing confidential information to prevent future harm or protect public safety: BC Code rule 3.3-3.
