I think I’ve taken on too much and I’m feeling overwhelmed. How can I address this feeling?

The following are resources that may be helpful in answering your enquiry. Please familiarize yourself with them before moving on.

In brief: Feeling like you’ve taken on more than you have capacity for can be overwhelming. Luckily, there are steps you can take to maintain your mental well-being while upholding your professional obligations. Although you may be tempted to push through on your own, try to imagine seeking support as a strategic move to ensure your success and an investment in your legal community, rather than a sign of weakness. Check out the options below for ideas on where to start.

Call a Practice Advisor. Practice Advisors help lawyers and articled students navigate practice and ethical issues. While Practice Advisors do not deal with substantive legal questions, they can help you identify issues and talk through next steps. Your conversations with Practice Advice will remains confidential, except in cases of trust fund shortages.

Call a Bencher. Benchers have a wealth of practical knowledge and may be able to help you talk through a problem or offer suggestions for how to proceed.

Contact a counsellor through TELUS Health One. TELUS Health One can help with life's questions, issues and concerns including handling stress, maintaining relationships and challenges at work, including dealing with those feelings of overwhelm. The Law Society funds personal counselling and referral services through TELUS Health One. Services are confidential and available at no cost to individual BC lawyers and articled students and their immediate families.

Check out LifeSpeak. LifeSpeak is a great option if you don’t have the capacity to pursue individual counselling. As of 2023, the Law Society provides lawyers and articling students access to LifeSpeak, a digital wellness platform that offers content to help you manage your mental health. For in-the-moment support, check out guided meditations, videos and other resources for practical tips that you can implement immediately in your daily life.
