Summary of a decision of the President on an application for adjournment

Valorie Frances Hemminger Long

Called to the Bar: May 17, 1996

Written materials: March 25, 2020

Decision issued: April 1, 2020 (2020 LSBC 16)

Counsel: Angela Westmacott, QC for the Law Society, Richard Gibbs, QC for Valorie Frances Hemminger Long

Valorie Frances Hemminger Long applied to adjourn the hearing previously set for three days starting April 20, to either the week of September 14 or the week of September 21, 2020.

The president emphasized the Law Society’s public duty to continue to function as best as it can during the current COVID-19 public health emergency. He noted that the courts are continuing to serve the public using video and telephone technologies and the Law Society ought to be no different. He found there was no evidence that either counsel considered conducting the hearing using video technologies before the application was brought.

On balance, the president ordered the hearing be adjourned to the week of September 14, 2020 for five days. If public health restrictions remain, the hearing will go ahead as scheduled.
