Summary of Decision on Disciplinary Action
Ahping Adena Lee
Richmond, BC
Called to the bar: August 28, 1992
Hearing date: December 15, 2021
Panel: Jennifer Chow, QC (chair), Karen Kesteloo and Bruce LeRose, QC
Decision issued: January 26, 2022 (2022 LSBC 05)
Counsel: Michael D. Sherriff and Greg Cavouras for the Law Society; Mary Clare Baillie for Ahping Adena Lee
BACKGROUND
A hearing panel found that Ahping Adena Lee committed professional misconduct by misleading the court about the mortgagors being properly served with her client’s application to have funds paid out in a foreclosure proceeding. The panel also found Lee committed two breaches of the Law Society Rules when she failed to report income tax-related matters to the Executive Director.
DISCIPLINARY ACTION
The panel considered that Lee did not intentionally mislead the court, she had no previous discipline history and she acknowledged her misconduct. It also considered her financial situation and her provision of pro bono and unbundled legal services to individuals who would not otherwise be able to afford a lawyer. The panel ordered that Lee:
- pay a fine of $2,500;
- pay costs of $2,500; and
- be reprimanded for her failures to report income tax-related matters.
