The Law Society is seeking a permanent full-time, Practice Advisor in our Practice department. The Practice Advisor provides confidential advice to lawyers and students on matters of ethics and practice management, including:

  • The Law Society Rules and the Code of Conduct for British Columbia (“BC Code”):
  • Ethics advice (e.g., confidentiality, conflicts, undertakings and withdrawing from a file);
  • Practice advice (e.g., billing, client files and law office management);
  • Managing client relationships and relationships with other lawyers;
  • Client identification and verification;
  • Frauds, scams, and anti-money laundering; and
  • Personal coping and stress management.

The responsibilities of the position include:                      

  • Advising lawyers on matters of ethics and practice management by phone and email;
  • Creating and updating practice resources and online course materials;
  • Updating and revising the practice checklist manual on an annual basis;
  • Preparing and delivering presentations to lawyers and students;
  • Staying apprised of new developments and emerging trends in professional responsibility;
  • Analyzing issues of concern to lawyers and making recommendations for action such as changes to the Law Society Rules and the BC Code; and
  • Such other duties as the Director, Policy & Practice may require.

Qualifications

  • Practicing membership in the Law Society of BC or eligibility for membership.
  • A minimum of 5 years of recent practice experience.
  • Knowledge of the application of practice and business management concepts to the practice of law.
  • Superior writing and excellent interpersonal and communication skills

The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society of BC and the Professional Employees Association apply to this position. The salary range is $133,403.30 to $161,653.86.
