The 2020 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Law Society was held on Tuesday, October 6, 2020.
Virtual meeting
As permitted by Ministerial Order No. M167 and in light of the current public health orders, the 2020 AGM was held as a virtual meeting and there were no physical meeting locations.
Business of the meeting
The business of the 2020 AGM included the following:
- Westminster County Bencher Christopher McPherson, QC was acclaimed as the Law Society of BC’s Second Vice-President Election. He will serve as Second-Vice President in 2021, First Vice-President in 2022 and President in 2023.
- Benchers’ report of proceedings since last meeting
- Resolution 1: Appointment of Law Society auditors for 2020 was carried with 2,344 in favour, 28 against and 453 abstentions.
- Resolution 2: Benchers’ Resolution regarding Conduct of Future General Meetings was carried with 2,595 in favour, 117 against and 174 abstentions.
- Resolution 3: Resolution to direct the Benchers to ensure that Articling Agreements are consistent with section 16 and Parts 4 and 5 of the Employment Standards Act was carried with 1,567 in favour, 1,163 against and 187 abstentions.
- Resolution 4: Resolution to direct the Benchers to appoint a Committee of Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons to consider a replacement for the statue of Sir Matthew Baillie Begbie was carried with 1,774 in favour, 637 against and 441 abstentions.
- Resolution 5: Resolution to direct the Benchers to amend Law Society Rules to confirm that Lawyers practising as Mediators, Arbitrators, and Parenting Coordinators are engaged in the Practice of Law and may deposit retainers into their trust accounts was carried with 1,492 in favour, 429 against and 867 abstentions.
