The Law Society of BC is seeking a temporary, full-time, Staff Lawyer in our Investigation, Monitoring & Enforcement (IME) department for an 18-month term. In keeping with the Law Society’s mandate to protect the public interest, Investigations, Monitoring & Enforcement Staff Lawyers conduct investigations into a broad range of conduct issues, including the misuse of a trust account, improper handling of trust funds or other accounting rule breaches, misleading conduct, conflicts of interest, or a failure to make inquiries in the face of suspicious circumstances.

The duties of the position include:        
  • Conducting fair, proportionate, and timely investigations by gathering and assessing evidence, both independently and as part of a team;
  • Conducting interviews of complainants, subject lawyers, and witnesses;
  • Exercising sound judgment in file handling and in assessing complaints to determine whether further action is necessary;
  • Preparing clear and concise assessment letters for files closed with no further action;
  • Preparing and presenting detailed opinions to the Discipline Committee; and
  • Other duties as the Director or Manager, IME may require.
Qualifications
  • Practicing membership with the Law Society of BC, or eligibility for membership. 
  • A minimum of 5 years of recent practice experience. 
  • Superior investigatory, interviewing, and communication skills. 
  • Excellent legal writing and time-management skills. 
  • Knowledge of the ethical and professional obligations of lawyers.
  • Ability to handle complex, document-intensive files in a timely manner. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the team.
  • Understands and can apply procedural fairness;
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed practices and anti-money laundering initiatives highly desirable.
The salary range for this position is $145,326.22 to $176,101.67.
