The Law Society is seeking a temporary, full-time Staff Lawyer in our Intake & Early Resolutions department for a 12-month term. The Staff Lawyer, Intake & Early Resolution is responsible for the effective investigation, assessment and resolution of complaints against lawyers, students and former members and works with Law Society Discipline Counsel and other staff, as necessary. The Staff Lawyer, Intake & Early Resolution is also responsible for correctly evaluating those complaints involving disciplinary or competency issues and referring these to the appropriate Committee of Benchers together with recommendations as to the suitable sanction or action required. The position requires that the Staff Lawyer, Intake & Early Resolution efficiently manage the assigned file load.
The duties of this position include:
- Reviewing, analyzing and investigating complaints
- Gathering and assessing all necessary information during the investigation of a complaint
- Exercising sound judgment in file handling and in assessing complaints to determine whether further action is necessary by the Law Society
- Preparing opinions of fact and law for consideration by the Discipline and Practice Standards Committees
- Working with and coordinating investigations carried out by other departments within the Law Society
- Such other duties as the Director of Intake, Early Resolution and Practice Standards may require
Qualifications
- Practising membership in the Law Society of BC or eligibility for membership.
- A minimum of five years of recent practice experience. May require specific subject matter expertise.
- Superior writing and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Mediation and Trauma-Informed training is an asset.
The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society and Professional Employees Association apply to this position.
This position is within the Professional Conduct job classification and the salary range for this position is $145,326.22 to $176,101.67.
