The Law Society is seeking a temporary, full-time Paralegal in our Discipline department for an 18-month term. The Paralegal, Discipline works as part of a team to support the work of the Discipline group of the Professional Regulation Department, in particular supporting Discipline Counsel in effectively carrying out the Discipline Committee’s directives related to discipline hearings, section 47 reviews and interim proceedings. This position works closely with lawyers and other staff in Discipline and other groups within the regulatory department and reports to the Director, Discipline.
The duties of the position may include:
- Reviewing and organizing large amounts of evidence for document disclosure, identifying potential redactions for privilege and/or relevance, preparing disclosure indexes;
- Assessing and supporting Discipline Counsel with hearing preparation, including by drafting outlines of hearing submissions, notices to admit and agreed statements of fact, and preparing professional conduct records;
- Independently maintaining the Discipline group’s research and resources databases, including by regularly preparing condensed legal summaries of hearing decisions, and citation outcome reports;
- Providing research to the Discipline Counsel and to the Director, Discipline on files handled by external counsel;
- Performing such other duties as the Director may require.
Qualifications:
- Completion of a recognized paralegal program or equivalent, and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in an investigative or litigation environment.
- Ability to apply legal research, writing and analytical skills with accuracy and professionalism.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to handle and effectively prioritize a large volume of work.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Proficiency with computer software including: Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Adobe, case and document management programs, and database and knowledge management systems.
The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society of BC and the Professional Employees Association apply to this position.
The salary range for this position is $79,133.01 - $96,632.82.
