When a complaint is made against a lawyer practising in BC, the Law Society has the authority to investigate the conduct and competence of the lawyer.

This includes lawyers in private practice, legal aid lawyers and government lawyers. The Law Society may also review the conduct of a lawyer outside the practice of law if the conduct reflects badly on the legal profession.
