Our Discipline department is seeking a full-time Paralegal. The Paralegal, Discipline works as part of a team to support the work of the Discipline group of the Professional Regulation Department, in particular supporting Discipline Counsel in effectively carrying out the Discipline Committee’s directives related to discipline hearings, section 47 reviews and interim proceedings. This position works closely with lawyers and other staff in Discipline and other groups within the regulatory department and reports to the Director, Discipline and External Litigation.

The duties of the position include:

  • Reviewing and organizing large amounts of evidence for document disclosure, including identifying potential redactions for litigation privilege, solicitor-client privilege, confidentiality and/or relevance, and preparing disclosure indexes;
  • Independently assessing case files and evidence, identifying potential legal issues and facts related to breaches of the Legal Profession Act, Law Society Rules and Code of Professional Conduct for British Columbia;
  • Independently assisting and supporting Discipline Counsel with interim proceedings and discipline hearings, including, but not limited to:
    • Reviewing and identifying the relevant facts and applicable evidence while drafting notices to admit and agreed statements of fact;
    • Conducting legal research, including identifying legal issues and applying research results to the applicable facts of a case;
    • Substantive legal drafting of hearing submissions involving identifying the appropriate legal tests and analysis and application of relevant legislation and case law;
    • Compiling professional conduct records in accordance with the Rules,
  • Independently maintaining the Discipline group’s research and resources databases, including by regularly preparing condensed legal summaries of hearing decisions, and citation outcome reports;
  • Providing research and other support to the Director, Discipline & External Litigation on files handled by external counsel;
  • Performing such other duties as the Director may require, which may include independent research and report writing.
Qualifications
  • Paralegal certification from an accredited institution, supplemented by a minimum of three years of relevant experience in an investigative or litigation environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to apply advanced legal research, writing and analytical skills with accuracy and professionalism; finished work product is professional, with the use of correct grammar and formatting.
  • Proficiency with computer software including: Microsoft Office, Excel, Adobe, case and document management programs, and database and knowledge management systems.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to handle and effectively prioritize a large volume of work.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society of BC and the Professional Employees Association apply to this position.

The salary range for this position is $84,422 - $91,763.
