Law societies launch national campaign to unite Canadians around the rule of law

As Canadians express concerns over the strength of our democratic freedoms, and threats to democracy dominate international headlines, a coalition of law societies have come together to launch Ours to Protect, a national campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of the rule of law.

The campaign is designed to unite Canadians around our shared values and spark conversations about protecting fundamental democratic principles, such as fairness, justice and equality. It highlights that while Canadians overwhelmingly support the rule of law, many see warning signs about threats to our democratic systems, including perceived political interference.

“The rule of law is fundamental to maintaining our Canadian democracy. It ensures that no one is above the law, even those in positions of power, and that the rules are applied fairly and impartially to everyone,” says Law Society of BC President Brook Greenberg, KC.

The campaign offers an opportunity to engage Canadians in learning, dialogue and action to safeguard the democratic principles that define our country. The Law Society of BC encourages the public and the profession to learn more about the rule of law and why it is important to our democracy.

Now, more than ever, it’s essential for all Canadians to understand the principles that work behind the scenes to sustain our human rights.
