New Westminster lawyer Robert L. Dick has agreed to a two-month suspension for professional misconduct, commencing on July 3, 2025.
Dick admitted in a consent agreement that between 2018 and 2021, while acting for a client in a business venture, he failed to guard against becoming the tool of an unscrupulous client, make reasonable inquiries about the circumstances, including the identity of the client or other persons, the subject matter and objectives of the retainer and the source of funds. He also failed to decline to act or continue to act until there was a reasonable basis to believe that the business venture was legitimate. In addition, while representing his client in relation to a proposed lease of premises for their business, Dick acted in a conflict of interest by introducing the landlord of the premises to a competing retailer as a prospective tenant.
In accepting the consent agreement, the Chair of the Discipline Committee considered an Agreed Statement of Facts and a letter from Dick containing his admissions.
