Vernon lawyer Leonard Hil Marriott has admitted to professional misconduct and agreed to resign from the Law Society by July 1, 2025. As of that date, he is prohibited from practicing law for a minimum of 10 years.
In a proposal under Rule 4-29 of the Law Society Rules, Marriott admitted to committing professional misconduct related to two citations issued December 13, 2022 and June 14, 2023. A hearing panel found that Marriott failed to provide his client with the quality of service required of a competent lawyer concerning a property transfer, and that he drafted and filed materials in the Supreme Court of BC that he knew contained false or misleading information. Another hearing panel found that in the course of acting in a wills and estates matter, Marriott failed to provide the quality of service required of a competent lawyer, improperly withdrew executor fees from funds in trust, and improperly withdrew legal fees when he was not entitled to those funds. The full decisions can be found at 2024 LSBC 47 and 2025 LSBC 05.
Marriott has agreed not to apply for re-instatement to the Law Society or elsewhere within Canada for a minimum of 10 years and not to act in any fiduciary roles or handle fiduciary property arising from a solicitor-client relationship without the prior written consent of the Executive Director of the Law Society, commencing on July 1, 2025.
