For the Public

We all need legal services at some point in our lives. Whether you’re buying a home, writing a will or running a business, lawyers can help you navigate complex legal processes.

The Law Society protects you by ensuring lawyers are competent and taking disciplinary action when needed. Our regulatory functions include:

  • Reviewing and investigating complaints and concerns about lawyers. In this section, you can find information on how to file a complaint, the complaints process, complaints about fees and sexual misconduct, harassment or discrimination, and whether you can seek compensation.
  • Taking action against those who are not authorized or licensed to practice law and who put the public at risk by performing unregulated legal services. Read more about unauthorized practice of law below.
  • Applying to the courts to appoint a custodian if a lawyer can no longer run their practice. Find out about what to do when a custodian contacts you to discuss your files.
