Apply for call and admission

The Law Society’s rules on call and admission cover applicants seeking their first call and admission after completing their supervised experience and their training course. They also cover applicants who are transferring from another Canadian jurisdiction.

The information below is about first call and admission in BC. See also: Transfers.

Eligibility to apply

You are eligible for call and admission once you have completed:

at least nine (unless reduced) months of supervised practice experience – an articling term or a judicial clerkship;
the training course;
your Bencher interview; and
the Practice Management Course.

You must complete your supervised practice experience and your training course within your 24-month admission period. Your admission period is the time between the earlier of your articling start date or training program start date, and the date you apply for call and admission, and must not exceed 24 months: Rule 2-76 (0.1) and (0.2).

Timeline for application and paying fees

At least 30 days before your anticipated call date, and even if you are working to completing your articles or PREP within the next month, you should:

submit your call and admission application to registration@lsbc.org; and
pay your call and admission fee

Your desired call date could be delayed if your application is late, incomplete, or missing documents.

What to include in your call and admission application

Articling applicants

Articled Student - Call & Admission Application package, which includes:

- Petition for Call & Admission
- Declaration of Principal completed and signed by your principal
- Declaration of Student

Pay the relevant fees related to your call and admission:

complete the fee option sheet below that corresponds to the month of your anticipated call date using one of the LSBC payment methods. Contact registration@lsbc.org if you do not see the relevant month.

Law clerk applicants

Law Clerk – Call and Admission package, which includes:

- Petition for Call & Admission
- Law Clerk Call & Admission application form

Written report on the applicant’s character and competence from the judge for whom they clerked.

Proof of academic qualification:

- an official transcript from a Canadian law school showing all grades and the JD conferred, sent directly from your university by email (registration@lsbc.org) or, if necessary, by post to Registration & Licensee Services Department, 845 Cambie Street, Vancouver, BC, V6B 4Z9; or
- an electronic copy of the Certificate of Qualification issued by the National Committee on Accreditation.

Our review of your application

Before you can be called and admitted, the Law Society must be satisfied that you are of good character and repute and fit to become a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court. We will assess this as part of your application: see Good Character, Repute and Fitness Requirement. For those who articled, this will be an updated assessment. For those who clerked, this will be the first assessment.

The Registration & Licensee Services team will connect with you about your application at least two weeks before your anticipated call date. If you have met the requirements, you will receive information about taking the Barristers and Solicitors’ Oath (mandatory) and upcoming Call and Admission Ceremonies (optional, but encouraged): see After approval for call and admission.
