Applying to PLTC

Before applying to the Professional Legal Training Course (PLTC), you must:

  • be enrolled in or applying to the Law Society Admission Program; and
  • have entered into an Articling Agreement.

You should also review the information on this website regarding PLTC and the “FAQ: Law Society Admission Program” information sheet.

When to take PLTC

The Professional Legal Training Course (PLTC) is currently an online course offered three times a year in the Spring, Summer and Fall.

Applicants may attend PLTC at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of articles, subject to space available in the session requested. Applicants are required to request a first and a second choice of a PLTC session. An applicant’s second session choice must be later in date than their first choice. Please be prepared to attend either PLTC session until you receive an official PLTC registration email. PLTC registration for each session is confirmed approximately eight weeks after the application deadline.

If you are unable to successfully pass the course, you will be required to do so during the next session of PLTC. If you were attending PLTC at the end of your articling year, this may delay your eligibility date to begin practice.

How to apply for PLTC

Step 1: Download and complete the Professional Legal Training Course Application form.

Step 2: Send your completed application form by mail to the Law Society or by email to pltc@lsbc.org, before the deadline of the session you requested as a first choice. Indicate a first and a second choice of a PLTC session (the latter must be later in date than the first choice).

For applications received on or before the deadline, the Law Society will make every effort to register you in the session you indicated as your first choice. However, for the Summer session, we regularly have more applicants. If you choose this as your first option, then choose your second option wisely.  The available spots are not assigned on a first come first serve basis. However, students who applied for an oversubscribed session will be waitlisted by date of receipt of the application form by PLTC.

It is your responsibility to ensure the Law Society receives your application before the deadline date(s) for the session(s) requested. Students who submit their application forms past the deadline may still be admitted if there is space available in the session.

Step 3: Receive a confirmation of receipt from the Law Society. If you do not receive this confirmation email, contact pltc@lsbc.org immediately.

Confirmation and wait-listing

The Law Society does not reserve places for students in applying to PLTC.

Confirmation of acceptance into a session is sent approximately eight weeks after the application deadline. Once confirmed, a student may not transfer to another session unless space is available and the principal consents.
